Bihar civil service applicants demand re-examination and face lathi-charge: FIR against Prashant Kishor.
Protesters gathered at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan with Prashant Kishore and attempted to march to the Chief Minister’s residence, prompting police action in the evening.
Protesters demanding the cancelation of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) exam scheduled for December 13 were dispersed by police on Sunday, using water cannons and lathi charges.
Earlier in the day, demonstrators gathered at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, where they were joined by Jan Suraaj’s founder, Prashant Kishore. Later that evening, as they attempted to march toward the chief minister’s residence, police intervened, according to District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh. He further stated that the demonstrators attempted to jump over barricades while moving from Gandhi Maidan to JP Golumber.
A massive crowd of protesters assembled at Gandhi Maidan, openly disregarding official warnings that such a gathering would be considered illegal. According to Singh, the district police have filed an FIR against 21 identified individuals—including Prashant Kishore, his party leader Manoj Bharti, local tutor Ramanshu Mishra—and an estimated 600-700 unidentified participants for arranging a student assembly at the venue despite the administration’s denial of permission.
Kishore arrived in the afternoon and stayed for nearly an hour, condemning Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for putting a private visit to Delhi ahead of addressing the issues of his state’s young.
He also proposed that students participate in a “relay fast” to decrease the amount of people putting their health at danger for the cause.
Kishore, while addressing the BPSC candidates, expressed his support for the protesting students, saying, “I stand in solidarity with the protesting students.” He also criticized the chief minister, pointing out that instead of addressing the concerns of the aspirants, the chief minister had left for Delhi. He further emphasized that the demonstration would persist until their demand to cancel the exam was rejected.
Some protestors were held by police near JP Golumber after refusing to leave the roadways.
Water cannons and mild force were used to disperse protestors who were blocking traffic by lying on the roads near JP Golumber, the DM stated.
The government has demonstrated an active commitment to tackling the issues raised by the youth. In response, the chief secretary has consented to hold a meeting with a five-member delegation of BPSC aspirants who have been seeking an audience with either the Chief Minister or a senior official.. However, protestors were disorganised and failed to designate five people,” the district magistrate remarked.
Speaking to reporters, a BPSC aspirant stated, We never anticipated the government to treat us like way. We are fighting for our own rights; we have nothing to do with those who have come here to support our political cause.
Two teachers from Patna, Ramanshu Mishra and Rohan Anand, were arrested by the police on charges of provoking students, as stated by a police officer from the Patna district.
An official stated, Both individuals are currently out on conditional bail and receiving treatment due to health concerns.
Meanwhile, the protesting candidates, who have been demonstrating for several days, are demanding the annulment of the 70th Integrated Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) over claims of a widespread question paper leak, asserting that holding a re-exam in only one center would be unjust.
