Maddock Films, the film’s production firm, tweeted the stats of Chhaava on its official X feed on Saturday, saying the movie had achieved the record for the “biggest opening ever for a historical Hindi film.”
“Yeh ‘chhaava ki dahaad’ hai. Roared like a real warrior king! The largest opening ever for a historical Hindi film. Book your tickets now,” the studio stated, along with a poster. The film grossed ₹50 crore globally on its opening day. According to the filmmakers, the movie collected ₹33.1 crore at the Indian box office.
Titled Chhaava, the film is helmed by director Laxman Utekar and backed by Dinesh Vijan’s production banner, Maddock Films. Featuring Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in key roles, the movie hit theaters on Friday. Chhaava is Vicky Kaushal’s third biographical film, following Sardar Udham and Sam Bahadur.
Vicky portrays Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, son of the Maratha empire’s founder, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Rashmika plays Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife, Maharani Yesubai, while Khanna represents Aurangzeb. Diana Penty, Ashutosh Rana, and Vineet Kumar Singh complete the cast.
Chhaava received a mixed reception from critics, who applauded the performances of Vicky and Akshaye but expressed dissatisfaction with the storyline and sluggish pacing. Despite the critiques, the film is showing strong momentum on Saturday, indicating a promising start to its opening weekend at the box office.
