Farmer who attempted self-harm at Shambhu border passes away in Patiala hospital

Ranjodh Singh, hailing from Ratanheri village in Ludhiana district, reportedly took his own life.

The 57-year-old farmer, who was said to have attempted self-harm during the farmers’ protest at the Shambhu border On December 14, he passed away from his injuries at Rajindra Hospital, a government facility, as reported by PTI on Wednesday.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on an indefinite hunger strike at the Khanauri border since November 26.

Singh leaves behind his parents, wife, daughter, and son. He had been actively participating in the Punjab farmers’ protest at the Shambhu border, advocating for demands like a legal guarantee for MSP on crops.

Farmers associated with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13. Their marches toward Delhi were halted by security forces.

Dallewal, who has been fasting for three weeks, has refused medical assistance despite intervention from authorities.

“He is stable for now, but doctors advise that hospitalization would be in his best interest,” stated Punjab Advocate General Singh.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court assured farmers that the “court doors remain open to address any suggestions or grievances they may have.”

In addition to Dallewal’s 23-day hunger strike, farmers also held a three-hour ‘rail roko’ protest at 52 locations across Punjab today.
