Amitabh Bachchan trusted him with Aag, says Ram Gopal Varma, recalling SS Rajamouli questioned his movie choices.

Ram Gopal Varma, a filmmaker, spoke on his career and Amitabh Bachchan’s trust in him during the 2007 film Aag.

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) discussed how Amitabh Bachchan trusted him while working on RGV Ki Aag, despite the fact that it was a remake of the classic Sholay. The filmmaker also recalls SS Rajamouli questioning his film selections after a series of disasters.

RGV revealed that when working on RGV Ki Aag, he was intent on crafting a gimmicky adaptation of Sholay. Reflecting on the situation, he stated that if someone had questioned if the picture could fulfill Satya’s standards, he might not have been able to provide a compelling answer.

Amitabh Bachchan entrusted RGV with Aag.
When asked if Amitabh Bachchan, who appeared in both Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag and Sholay, had questioned his judgments, the filmmaker denied it. He elaborated, “That was his faith in me.” He did not inquire why. Their decision not to interrogate me was logical given that I had established credibility as a director after making so many pictures. Perhaps they assumed that I knew exactly what I was doing. At the time, they had no idea how Aag would turn out. Amitabh probably assumed I was making an interpretation of Sholay.”

When SS Rajamouli asked RGV about his choices.
Reflecting on his previous failures, RGV spoke about his experience with Naach (2004), another picture that, like RGV Ki Aag, failed at the box office. He shared an incident where SS Rajamouli challenged his choices, highlighting his status as an imaginative and intelligent director. RGV revealed that his failures stemmed from a lack of sincerity and self-reflection in his creative approach. He acknowledged his irresponsibility and tendency to not take himself seriously, often depending on sensationalism or shock tactics instead of genuine storytelling.

He explained, “In this context, SS Rajamouli asked me, ‘A person as intelligent and well-read as you, why would you do this?'” I informed him, “I’m not just a filmmaker; I also live my life on my own terms.” In that setting, something like this occurs.

Ram Gopal Varma recently received praise for his open admission of being blinded by the success of his films Satya and Rangeela. In a passionate post on X, the filmmaker told spectators that he would devote himself totally to his next picture and stop making movies for shock value. Following that, on Wednesday, RGV unveiled his upcoming project, Syndicate. He touted it as his most ambitious and horrifying production to date, promising to “wash away” all of his “cinematic sins” from the previous several years with this new picture.
