The video showcases the Tuesday incident, where more than two dozen bystanders remained silent and refrained from stepping in during the assault.
A frightening video of a 30-year-old guy using a cleaver to beat his 28-year-old colleague in an office parking lot in Pune, Maharashtra, has gone popular on social media. A video from Tuesday captures the shocking incident, showing the act unfolding in front of nearly two dozen spectators, none of whom stepped in to stop it.
The hazy one-minute video, which leaked online on Thursday, shows the assailant calmly wielding the cleaver as his colleague, Shubhada Kodare, drops to the ground, blood spilling around her.
Although over 20 people witnessed the violence at the BPO where both the perpetrator and victim worked, none attempted to intervene. Some bystanders only subdued the man after he dropped the cleaver.
The failure of those present to intervene has sparked significant outrage over bystander apathy and raised serious concerns about workplace safety for women.
Due to the delicate and graphic nature of the topic, decided not to use graphics in this story.
Shubhada Kodare was allegedly targeted because she refused to repay money provided to her by the attacker, Krishna Satyanarayan Kanojia, under false pretenses. Shubhada died of her injuries later on Tuesday at a private hospital. Kanojia has been taken into custody, and the investigation is currently underway.
The NCW strongly denounces the assault.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has strongly condemned the murder of a woman in Pune and called for swift and decisive action to bring the perpetrator to justice. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to Maharashtra’s Director General of Police, Rashmi Shukla, asking an immediate and comprehensive investigation.
The Commission has instructed the state police to register charges against the accused and provide an Action Taken Report, along with a copy of the FIR, within 48 hours.
What led to the incident?
According to the report, the investigation indicated that Shubhada and Kanojia worked as executives in the BPO’s accounts department in Ramwadi, Yerawada.
Shubhada from Karad in Satara requested a loan of ₹4 lakh from Kanojia around a year ago to cover her father’s medical expenses.
Several months down the line, Shubhada informed Kanojia that her father was scheduled for surgery. Kanojia paid a visit to her father a few days later as a gesture of goodwill, only to learn that he was in fine health.
Kanojia then requested his money back, but Shubhada became enraged and filed a non-cognizable crime against him three months ago.
Despite Kanojia’s persistent requests for reimbursement, she avoided him and did not return his calls. “”Furious and determined, Kanojia arrived ready and launched an attack on her, Patil shared with me.
