Anurag Basu claims that the Hindi cinema industry is ‘as young as’ Korea’s: “Our films are only seen by Indians.”

According to Anurag Basu, Hindi films are only seen by Indians and “a very small group of people who are passionate about cinema.”

Filmmaker Anurag Basu has compared the Hindi film industry to the Korean film industry, describing both as ‘young’. Anurag stated that Indian films are only watched by us, while Korean films “have a global audience.” The filmmaker also provided an update on his project, Aashiqui 3.

What Anurag Basu stated about the Hindi film industry.
Anurag stated, “I believe the whole cinema is noticing our films. But I believe we have a long way to go because mainstream cinema continues to appeal to the Indian diaspora and Indian audience. We are still far from reaching a global audience. We only have an Indian audience globally. I think there is a long way to go.”

Anurag describes the Hindi cinema business as ‘new’, similar to Korea’s. He highlights that their focus is exclusively on the Indian audience. We are as young as the Korean film industry. Nevertheless, their reach extends to an international audience. People watch their movies, and we see their movies. Our films are exclusively viewed by Indians. There are extremely few people that are passionate about cinema. We do not offer global catering. We only worry about Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the weekend, 100 crore, 500 crore, bas vahi tak (until here only),” he said.

Despite receiving critical praise for films such as All We Imagine As Light and Anuja on a worldwide scale, Anurag feels that mainstream Indian filmmaking largely serves the Indian diaspora and viewership.
